VERSUS
“VERSUS”
Introduction:
I have named the whole work in this exposition “Versus”. It is a latin word which is used in different contexts when one wants to describe opposites or contradictions.
As symbols of versus I have selected the bark of cork-oak, which grows where I live in the South of France, and ordinary glass where I make geometric etchings or coloured (blue) glass with lines that make shadows on the background.
I find the expression in the bark as a strong symbol of the life-force in nature and it's ability to survive. The trees live several hundreds of years and have survived together with people all this time when treated with care and respect.
Another aspect I found interesting is that under the rough, grey-black (not pretty) surface, I found new pattern and colours, ochre, sienna and umbra. The bark is light, warm to touch, soft, easy to cut and very resistant and unchangeable. Insulate well and can not burn.
The opposition, the glass, is selected because it is also produced from nature (sand), but in an advanced process . It is cool, smooth, heavy, hard and transparent. It is fragile, easily cracked and difficult to cut and form. There is only one acid (fluss) that can attack the surface.
I have associated the bark with nature forms and the glass with geometric forms. The glass' transparency became a symbol of what's under the surface or beyond and not seen at first glance and create curiosity. I have transfer this view into my paintings. There is closeness and transparency that makes distance. I have used different paper on canvas to make texture and sealed the paper properly before using acrylic paint and water.
The blue colours are complementary to the earth colours and give strength to the glass which would appear anonymous otherwise, compared to the strong expression in the cork.
My idea is to unite opposites into an aesthetic composition, to visualise the possibility that oppositions can unite in harmony and at the same time let the two keep their individuality as much as possible.

This photeo is from my first montage I made to explain my idè, Versus.
The glas has been etched and one piece of cork is cut in two to show the outside and inside. Both is fixed on a painted panel of wood with four screws.
